INTRODUCTION
Manual handling tasks occur wherever people are at work. Every time we use our bodies to move an object we are in the process of manual handling, whether we are in an office, factory, warehouse, shop or any other environment for work.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
To highlight the dangers of back pain, how they are caused and what you can do to prevent these dangers.
To encourage you to evaluate your manual handling tasks.
To demonstrate good manual handling techniques.
To increase your awareness of manual handling habits.
WHAT IS MANUAL HANDLING?
Manual handling refers to tasks requiring human physical effort.
This is not limited to lifting or carrying a load or just moving a heavy load.
Manual handling means using the body to exert the force of lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, carrying, moving, holding, restraining or to fix a load.
The load can be inanimate, such as a box or a painting, or animate, such as a person or an animal.
MANUAL HANDLING TASKS
Some examples of manual handling tasks daily include:
picking up paper boxes
carrying a shopping bag
pushing a stroller
unloading a car
stacking shelves
raising a child
moving furniture
INJURIES CAUSED BY INCORRECT MANUAL HANDLING
Manual handling tasks are the cause of a large number of workplace injuries each year. Improper manual handling tasks can cause hand, arm and neck injuries.
Accidentally dropping loads can also injure the legs. • However, most manual handling injuries affect the back.
The resulting injury can be a cut or bruise, but more commonly it is a muscle strain or ligament trauma.
Responsibility
What are my responsibilities regarding manual handling at work? As an employee, you must:
Cooperate with your employer in manual handling matters not to engage in behavior that could endanger yourself or others. Use mechanical devices correctly report hazardous work activities and any workplace defects, systems or equipment tell your employer about any physical deficiencies that could create risks

What Is the Manual Handling Training?
Manual handling training is a workplace safety program designed to educate employees and workers about how to lift, carry, and handle objects or materials safely to prevent musculoskeletal injuries and related problems. Musculoskeletal injuries, often caused by improper lifting and handling techniques, are a significant source of workplace injuries and can result in back pain, strains, sprains, and other health issues.
Who Needs the Manual Handling Training?
Manual handling training is relevant for a wide range of workers across various industries and job roles where manual lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of objects or materials is a routine or occasional task. Here are some examples of workers who typically need manual handling training:
  • Construction Workers.
  • Healthcare Workers.
  • Warehouse Personnel.
  • Agriculture Workers.
  • Retail Workers.
  • Office Workers.
Who Is Responsible for Manual Handling Training?
In Ireland, the onus of providing a safe and secure workplace for employees falls squarely on the shoulders of employers. This means that employers bear the responsibility of not only identifying and mitigating potential safety hazards but also ensuring that their workforce is adequately trained in safety measures.

Consequently, it's imperative for employers to take proactive steps in implementing the requisite safety training programs. At the same time, employees are equally obligated to actively engage in these courses and diligently apply the knowledge and skills they gain during their work experiences.

Furthermore, it's worth noting that many job seekers often choose to proactively enroll in Manual Handling training before attending interviews. By doing so, they not only bolster their resumes but also enhance their employment prospects. This proactive approach demonstrates a commitment to workplace safety and can be a compelling asset when seeking employment opportunities.
What Will You Learn?
  • Safety Regulations.
  • Use of Equipment.
  • Hazard Awareness.
  • Lifting Techniques.
  • Contingency Plans.
  • Risk Mitigation.
How Long Is the Certificate Valid?
The standard certification for manual handling training is typically valid for a period of three years. After this period, individuals are typically required to undergo a refresher course to renew their certification. This renewal process helps ensure that individuals remain current with the latest safety practices and regulations and continue to work safely when performing manual handling tasks. It also helps employers maintain compliance with legal safety standards and reduce the risk of accidents in the workplace.
What Other Courses Should You Consider?
Businesses and workers who complete Manual Handling training can further enhance workplace safety by considering courses on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Workplace First Aid. These courses provide valuable knowledge and skills that can complement manual handling training and contribute to a safer work environment.
